Introduction to Airport SMS Training

Qualatech Aero Consulting Ltd. is a recognised service provider to the Canadian Airport Counsel for Safety Management and Human Factors Training.

The purpose of the QualaTech Airport Safety Management training course is to give participants a concentrated overview and update on Airport Safety Management principles and practices.  Additionally, the course will introduce practical implementation and documentation of a Safety Management System (SMS).  This knowledge will enable participants to review safety management arrangements at their own airport, analyze the assets and shortcomings, assess what needs to be accomplished and to manage the implementation and/or ‘on-going’ operation of a SMS.

QualaTech’s dedicated Airport SMS training course commences with a review of the requirements for safety management and the regulatory framework (including ICAO) within which a SMS must ultimately function and operate.  This knowledge is essential: not only to fully appreciate the fundamental issues in Airport Safety Management, but also to realize that the success of any SMS program, ultimately depends on a successful partnership/relationship between the regulator and the service provider.  Ideally, a SMS is a form of regulation/control that safeguards the public interest.  In an approved, implemented, functioning and regulated SMS, the best interests of the public (the customers) and the service provider are guaranteed.

Having clarified the purpose of safety regulation and the role of the regulator, including the latter’s relationship with the service provider, QualaTech’s SMS course then exemplifies the issues involved in implementing a SMS – including: day to day practical matters, safety assessment and the affiliated safety case, hazard identification analysis and risk assessment.

QualaTech’s Airport SMS course continues with a review of quality assurance and quality management in SMS, noting how they help develop a safety culture while contributing to the safety management process.  Following this is an explanation on issues related to safety auditing.

The final element of Part 1 deals with the key issues of economics and finance, examining in the process their relationship to safety.  Last but not least, the course also examines matters of culpability, negligence and the ‘duty of care’.

Having accomplished a complete study and review of all the elements of safety management, Part 2 deals with the national protocol for SMS and a wide range of operational airport Safety Management Issues, experiences and practical advice.  Also included where appropriate, is the vital issue of designing safety critical procedures.
